Celebrating Friendship Bollywood style!

Friendship has been an oft repeated theme for films in Bollywood, changing its colours with the ushering in of a new generation. While the 70’s and 80’s saw a protagonist who could sacrifice his life in friendship, the 90’s saw more of the true lover who could go saath samundar paar for the love of his life. The coming of the twenty first century brought to the limelight a more practical friend and lover, giving friendship a more balanced approach. On the occasion of FRIENDSHIP DAY, Glamsham pays a tribute to some of the most memorable flicks on friendship, because truly, hum na rahe kabhi yaaron ke bin!

SHOLAY

Riding on a motorbike crooning ”Yeh dosti hum nahin chodenge” gave Jai and Veeru a cult status in the nation. SHOLAY redefined the meaning of friendship in Bollywood and till today, their spirit is alive in the hearts of many.

DOSTANA

Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi’s (Shatrughan Sinha) DOSTANA was yet another celebration of this subject. Their tale of togetherness and sacrifice took the concept of friendship in Bollywood to a new level. Torn between being friends and lovers, the two truly demonstrated that friends are forever.

YAARANA

This was a friendship never seen before, never attempted again on silver screen. Ideal in its true sense, it portrayed the length to which friendship can go when all fails. Bishan and Kishan’s YAARANA made people wonder tere jaisa yaar kahaan?

DIL CHAHTA HAI

This film marked the departure of the YAARANA and DOSTANA of the 70s and 80s. The intensity of friendship took a flamboyant turn with a gang of buddies chilling on the beaches of Goa shouting Hum na rahe kabhi yaaron ke bin! Though the essence of their sentiments could draw a parallel with their earlier counterparts, the twenty first century youth did jo dil chahta tha!

RANG DE BASANTI

The Masti ki Paathshala gave rise to a different streak of friendship, with a bigger picture in the backdrop. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s attempt to channelize this josh for a larger cause, gave the sentiment yet another powerful dimension.

ROCK ON

It epitomized the new age definition of friendship; a rock band, hot chic, gang of boys and life at its best. This rollercoaster of emotions brought out the nuances of life on the edge, where friends are forever and passion never dies.

JAANE TU YA JAANE NA

The lines between friendship and love are blurred in this film. The emotions are no longer meant to mean frolic but can have serious emotional repercussions too. Jai and Aditi discover that their long term friendship has given rise to a new feeling between them. The film accepts the fact that friends can be your best lovers at times.
